On August 19, 2025, our dad, Randolph “Randy” Winfield Cook, 73, passed away at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. His time with us ended far too quickly, but his life was full of grit, laughter, and a love for the things — and people — that mattered most.
Born February 5, 1952, in Front Royal, Virginia, Randy was the son of Raymond Odester Cook and Sadie Elizabeth (Tharpe) Cook. From his earliest days, he was a hard worker with a strong back and stronger will, making a lifelong career as a house-painter. He took pride in his craft and, for many years, worked as a self-employed painter before retirement.
Sports were always close to Randy’s heart. He played baseball and football when he was young, but his greatest passion came later with softball. Competing with Larry’s Painting, a Major Amateur Softball team — the highest level short of professional play — he found not only competition but lifelong friendships. He also loved billiards, travel, and the camaraderie of being part of a team.
Randy was known for his humor, his grounded outlook on life, and his ability to connect with people in honest, down-to-earth ways. He faced life’s challenges head-on but always found joy in simple moments.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Larry Gene. He leaves behind his children Angela, Susan, and Randolph II; his wife, Monica; and his children Amanda and James. He also leaves six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, each of whom carries a piece of his strength and spirit forward.
Services will be private, and he will be laid to rest at Rosewood Memorial Park in Virginia Beach.
More than anything, Randy will be remembered for the love he had for his family, the friendships he built through work and play, and the laughter he brought to those lucky enough to know him. His story doesn’t end here — it lives on in those he loved.
