Julie Goodwin Irby

Julie Goodwin Irby, 85, passed away peacefully on December 3, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to Louise and Julius Goodwin. Julie earned her degree from Guilford College in 1968 and taught kindergarten and first grade.

Julie was deeply involved in her community, volunteering her time with numerous causes, including The First Presbyterian Church, where she was an elder. The junior women's club, and the

Cape Henry Collegiate schools auctioning events.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 66 years, Leigh Irby, her daughters Beth Withers (Joe) and Jane Goforth (Ronnie), and her grandchildren Ashlee, Josh, and other family members. She is also survived by her sister Teresa Blemings, her nephew Taylor, and her nieces Lauren and Louisa.

Julie is preceded by her son Jefferey Leigh Irby, and her grandson Brandon Lee Withers, and her sister Gayle Dorthy Goodwin.

Julie had a passion for playing cards and bridge where she found great joy in spending time with family and the abundance of her loving friendships.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. The family would like to extend their heartfelt love to her caregivers Carmen and Melvie, as well as the Westminster-Canterbury hospice at home nurses/aides team.
