She was born in Louisville, Kentucky to the late Charles William Leist and Mary Louise Morton Leist. She is preceded in death by her dear brother, Frank “Jimmy” Schmitz, Jr., among a host of beloved family members and treasured friends who welcomed her into eternal peace.
Donna was a devout Catholic whose faith guided every aspect of her life. Her relationship with the Lord was the foundation of her strength, compassion, and unwavering love for others. She lived her faith not only in prayer, but in action— through kindness, generosity, and a servant’s heart.
To know Donna was to be loved by her. She had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel like family. As a proud supporter of the military community, she became an “extra mom” and “extra grandma” to countless service members and their families. Whether through a warm meal, a listening ear, or a steady presence during deployments and difficult seasons, Donna (or Lady, as she was commonly known by) opened her heart without hesitation. Many who were far from their own families found comfort, encouragement, and unconditional love in her.
Donna was truly a best friend to all who had the pleasure of meeting her. Her laughter was contagious, her advice was sincere, and her hugs were unforgettable. She celebrated others’ joys as if they were her own and stood faithfully beside those walking through hardship. Her life was a beautiful reflection of grace, hospitality, and steadfast love.
She is survived by her daughters Ashley Fox (Navy Senior Chief, Bryan Fox), Jenni Hebel (David), and Melissa Bamman (James). She is also survived by her beautiful grandchildren who have truly been the absolute light of her life; MyKennah, Aiden, Karsen, Devyn, Justin, Police Sergeant Jared Dillon (Kristy), and Travis (Jenna) as well as the most perfect and adorable Great-Grandson, Jace, with two more Great-Grandchildren on the way.
Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched. The love she poured into her family, friends, and extended military community will continue to ripple through generations.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.” — Matthew 25:23
