Robert Lawrence Flanagan, age 83, of The Villages, Florida passed away on January 1, 2026. Bob was born on July 25, 1942 in Quincy, Massachusetts. Upon graduating from Quincy High School in 1960, Bob worked at American Airlines until entering the U.S. Marine Corps. He was honorably discharged in 1965. Bob moved from MA to Boca Raton, FL in 1967. He fell in love with Florida and never left; first working for IBM, and later receiving his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from Florida Atlantic University. For 32 years Bob was employed by the Board of County Commissioners of Palm Beach County; hired by the County’s Planning Division as a City Planner in 1973 and transferred to the Economic Development Office where he retired 2005. After retiring, Bob embraced life with curiosity and joy—especially when traveling, with cruises among his favorite adventures. He could often be found at his computer or in a sports bar, proudly cheering on his favorite teams. A true lover of nature, Bob had a special appreciation for trees and hated to see them cut down without reason. He also enjoyed gardening and proudly supported the Legacy Memorial Tree Program.
Bob is the son of William and Kay Flanagan (both deceased). He is survived by his brothers Thomas William Flanagan (wife Rita) and William Stang Flanagan. He is also survived by six nephews and nieces: Michael Brown, Matthew Flanagan, Melinda Taylor, Jolinda O’Brien, Lisa Dolan, and Kristi Shepard.
Bob was a genuine gentleman—warm, kind, and considerate to everyone he met. His gentle spirit and steady goodness left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 5323 E County Rd 462, Wildwood, Florida on Friday, March 13th at 10:30 am. The family will host a luncheon for family and friends immediately following the service. Bob’s ashes will be interred at the Florida National Cemetery, 6502 SW 102nd Ave, Bushnell, Florida on Monday, March 16th at 11:30 am. Bob was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps and will be interred with full military honors.
