Pete was born in Lowville, NY on March 28, 1965, the son of the late Jack K. and Delcie M. (McGowan) Chartrand. He attended Carthage Central High School, W. Carthage NY where he played both baseball and football before moving to Adams, NY. He graduated from South Jefferson Central and Jefferson County BOCES in 1984 where he studied carpentry and building trades. He worked in the construction field as a carpenter for several years before joining the New York State Department of Correctional Services in 1988 as well as owning his own contracting business. After a distinguished 25 year career he retired in 2013.
Pete loved working with kids coaching Pop Warner football where he won two championships and Little League baseball where he also won a championship as head coach. He loved being involved with his children. His daughter Ashley star softball and basketball player and his son Alex was a basketball, football and baseball standout in high school. He loved being in the outdoors, hunting or shooting or playing golf.
His greatest love outside his family was riding his Harley. He joined the Warthogs Motorcycle Club, a group comprised of law enforcement and first responders, who enjoy a shared brotherhood and love of riding and where he earned the nickname Spud. Each chapter helps raise monies to help various local charities in the area. He was deeply involved with the club, and they became like a second family. Brother Spud was always available to lend a helping hand to family and friends. He served his community as a volunteer firefighter and ambulance driver with Adam Center Fire Department and the South Jefferson Rescue Squad.
He was a beloved and cherished son, brother, husband, father and friend. He loved to have fun and was life of the party. His natural charm and affability allowed him to make many friends along the way. It seemed that he knew “everyone.”
