Born August 21, 1946, to Frank and Genevieve (Conklin) Trombley, she grew up in Canton, NY with 2 sisters Carole & Mary Lou, 4 brothers William, Frank, Jack, and Paul and a large extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Joan worked at Noble Hospital in Canton, NY prior to attending Canton ATC to study Medical Transcription and Secretarial Service. She met Lynn there, they were married, and moved to Homer, NY to raise their family. They were blessed that Lynn’s job at Smith Corona took them and their family on incredible sight-seeing adventures across the globe before finally settling in Cortland, NY. She was a homemaker for many years before working in the cafeteria while her children attended Homer Schools and retired when Lynn’s job took them to San Diego in 1992.
She was actively involved in Beta Sigma Phi, a national non-academic sorority, and forged bonds with several beloved sorority sisters in various chapters. With every move, she took great delight in decorating homes from Cortland, NY to Singapore, San Diego, Binghamton, Hastings, Weedsport, Wildwood FL, and of course her beloved “camp” in South Colton, NY. She was a diehard decorator, decorating for Christmas, Easter, Halloween, and just because she felt like it. Joan was an avid bowler in Singapore and leagues in Homer, NY – once appearing on TV for amateur bowling and collecting several trophies for her accomplishments.
Joan loved to bake and cook for others. She took great pleasure in making sure everyone was fed well – looking for that “just right” recipe that she knew they would love! She and Lynn loved to explore and discover wonderful restaurants and enjoy great food. She loved to dance and was an excellent craftswoman - sewing, needlepoint, macrame, and quilting. She loved quilting most and made beautiful quilts and wall hangings for family and friends. Her canine companions meant the world to her - from her college days with Whitey, to Ginger in Singapore, Haylee, Lacey, and finally Sammy & Maggie. She and Lynn had looked forward to continuing to explore the country in their motorhome with Sammy & Maggie.
Joan is survived by her husband Lynn F. Knopp; Two children Scott Knopp (wife April Shea) and Pamela Brock (husband Darrin Brock); Four grandchildren Leah Knopp, Brittney Knopp, Camille Brock, Taylor Brock; and two great-grandchildren, Austin, and Aubrey Blaney. Joan and Lynn would have celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary on August 20.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and caregivers for the loving care and compassion they showed to her over the past months.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life at the family camp, 305 Morgan Road, South Colton, NY on September 2, 2023 starting at 3PM. Please reach out to a family member to let us know if you can join us for this special day.
