

Jerry Burroughs Shrewsbury, 85, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2026, in Mount Dora, Florida. Born on February 16, 1941, in Washington, D.C., Jerry lived a life filled with purpose, dedication, and love. He is survived by his wife Dr. Carolyn B. Shrewsbury and their two children Lora Jean White and Brian Keith Shrewsbury.
Jerry pursued higher education at The University of Maryland and Bowie State College, earning a Master’s Degree in Education Administration. His academic achievements laid the foundation for a remarkable career that spanned both military service and education. After completing his studies and marrying the love of his life, Carolyn Shrewsbury, Jerry served six years in the United States Army National Reserves, achieving the rank of SP5. His time in the military exemplified his commitment to service and discipline.
Together with Carolyn, Jerry built a legacy that would touch countless lives. Sharing a passion for acrobatics and gymnastics, they founded Royal T's Gymnastics Center. Over the course of more than six decades, their vision grew into what is now MGA Gymnastics—a thriving institution that has inspired thousands of young athletes and families. Their dedication to fostering talent and community remains a testament to their shared dream.
Jerry also devoted much of his life to education in Prince George's County, Maryland. He began as a teacher before advancing to roles as a math/science coordinator and Vice Principal at Lamont Elementary School. Later, he became Principal at Templeton Elementary School and concluded his distinguished career as Director of the Howard B. Owens Science Center. Through these roles, Jerry left an indelible mark on students and colleagues alike.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jerry was a man of many interests and talents. He was an avid collector of artwork, scaled model cars and trains, snow globes, stamps, and coins—each piece reflecting his curiosity and appreciation for beauty and craftsmanship. He shared a love for travel with Carolyn; together they explored the world on numerous cruises that brought them joy and adventure.
Jerry’s faith was central to his life. Coming from a lineage of Christian missionaries and pastors, he found solace in his belief in eternal reunion with loved ones in the arms of his Heavenly Father. His gentle strength, quick wit, signature duck calls and whistles—always delivered with impeccable timing—brought smiles to all who knew him.
Jerry is also survived by his sister Mary Adeline Shrewsbury, his daughter’s former husband Bernard Joseph White Jr., son’s former wife Barbara Tichenor; grandchildren Brandon White (wife Catherine), Jose White (wife Tristyn), Drake Shrewsbury, Ansel White, Jibril Shrewsbury, Crystal White, Araceli White, Kellen Tichenor (wife Jasmine), Hayley Verdecana, Abby Makle, Adam Tichenor, Merideth Adomanis, Lauren Washington, Derrick Tichenor, Laura Clark; 35 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; as well as extended family members too numerous to list but deeply cherished.
He was predeceased by his parents Edmund Palmer Shrewsbury Sr. and Adeline Claggett Shrewsbury; his brother Edmund Palmer Shrewsbury Jr.; but their memories remained close to Jerry’s heart throughout his life.
Jerry will be remembered not only for his professional achievements but also for the warmth he brought into every room he entered. A world traveler with an enthusiastic spirit for volunteering and helping others whenever needed—he embodied kindness and generosity.

A memorial service will be held at The Cross Church on Sunday June 21, 2026, from 5:00-6:30 p.m., 4425 N Highway 19A, Mt. Dora, FL 32757.
