

James grew up in Camden, New York, and graduated from Camden Central School. He later continued his education at Syracuse University and graduated from Simmons Institute of Funeral Service, preparing for a life of steady purpose and service to others.
He proudly served in the US Army as a military police officer, a role that reflected a deep sense of duty and respect for community. He went on to work as a Funeral Director, a vocation marked by professionalism, care, and quiet strength—offering guidance and reassurance to families in their most difficult moments.
James was predeceased by his wife of 42 years, Frances (Ely) Pennington; his son, Brian Pennington of Waterloo, New York; and his step-daughter, Deborah Berry of Morgantown North Carolina.
He is survived by his daughter, Gail Pennington of Wilmington, Delaware; and his step-daughter, Tina Ridler of Rochester, Minnesota; as well as many grandchildren.
James will be laid to rest in the Veterans Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida.
