George Jay Warheit (90) of The Villages, FL, passed from this life on March 23, 2018. Born in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, George loved learning and in 1945, left home to attend college at Indiana Central College in Indianapolis, where he received his B.A. degree. He then enrolled at the United Theological Seminary in Dayton, OH, and received his Master of Divinity in 1952. He married Elizabeth Rider, and they have two children, Melissa and Karl. His early career was spent as pastor for the United Church of Christ in Ohio. In 1968, he earned his Ph.D. from Ohio State University, and began a new career as a college professor. He was a professor at the University of Florida for 17 years, and at the University of Miami for 10 years.
Over his academic career, he authored and/or co-authored over 70 scientific articles published in peer review journals. He served on numerous committees of the National Institute of Mental Health; the National Institute of Drug and Alcohol Abuse; and the National Institute of Alcohol and Addiction Abuse. He was a consultant to President Carter’s commission on the accident at Three-Mile Island. In addition to academics, George loved golf, football (Pittsburgh Steelers, Miami Hurricanes), and walking around the neighborhood, where he would have conversations with everyone he met.
George is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Delberta (Hitchings); his daughter, Melissa; his son, Karl; and stepsons John and Kenneth Morgan, and their families along with many nieces and nephews.
