Shirley Ann DuClos, age 90, and a longtime resident of St. Petersburg, Florida, passed away on June 6, 2026, while being compassionately cared for at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Sebring, Florida. Born on July 8th, 1935, in Hoboken, N.J., she was the daughter of the Percy and Hazel Powers. Shirley loved to tell that as a little girl she lived in the same building where Frank Sinatra had been born.
Shirley graduated from Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park, New York. After high school she worked for a record company as a secretary. During the summers, she would travel to Florida with her parents to get away from the harsh winters up north. It was during one of these trips that she met her first husband, Robert Beach. Married in 1956, St. Petersburg then became her permanent home. Shirley involved herself in the St. Petersburg Women’s Club and various other social groups. After Bob and she parted ways, she later married Bruce DuClos, setting up a home in the Bay Pines area and enjoying traveling to Europe and other faraway destinations.
Shirley attended the University of South Florida while in her 40’s and earned a B.A. degree in Sociology. She graduated with honors. She worked her way up the ladder with State Farm Insurance as an office manager, senior claims representative, and then as a licensed agent and adjustor. Upon retirement, Shirley was a ardent bridge player, an avid reader, and a devoted patron of the St. Petersburg Public Library. You could always find her reading of the latest mysteries, with one of the many dogs she owned through her life, lying comfortably by her side.
Shirley is survived be her daughters, Janet (Greg) Harris of Sebring, Florida; Stephanie McFarlin of St. Petersburg; Patricia Beach of Fernandina Beach, Florida; her son, Paul (Lisa) Beach of Orange Park, Florida; and her former husband, Bob Beach, St. Petersburg. Her grandchildren are Hannah (John) Burke of Orange Park; Caitlin (Michael) Moustoukas of Sarasota, Florida; Meagan Beach (Jason Nix), Texas; and Courtney (Josh) Evron of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She also leaves behind her precious great-grandchildren Isaac, Hunter, Camden, Caulder, Harris, Myles, and Holden; and her three nieces, Vicky, Patricia, and Amy. She was preceded in death by her brother, Rondal Powers.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, Pet Pal Animal Shelter in St. Petersburg, Florida of Strays in St. Petersburg, or The Good Shepherd Bud and Donna Somers Hospice House in Sebring, Florida.
