Richard (Dick) Lowe, passed away peacefully, in his 89th year, at his home, on Sunday, October 23, 2022, with his wife, of 64 years, Gloria and daughter Dee at his side. He was born in Chicago, IL on February 20, 1933.
Dick was predeceased by his mother Emilie L (née Wintrich) Lowe, his father Howard G. Lowe and his brother Robert C. Lowe. He is survived by the love of his life, Gloria, son Derrick Lowe (Wendy), daughter Dee Lowe-Pitman (Neil), son Douglas Lowe & son Darrell Lowe (Amy), his grandchildren, Jennifer Freeman (Tim), Austin Pitman (Gina), West Lowe (Ellyse), Justin Lowe, Lauren Lowe, Alex Pitman (Karissa), Dara Brown (Dan), Cory Pitman (Kelly) & Fisher Lowe, his great-grandchildren, Jaydon & Calie Freeman, Melody, Matthew, Mckinley & Miles Brown.
He spent much of his childhood between Chicago Illinois & Lake Dale Indiana. He raised his family in Glenview Illinois, moving to Houston Texas in 1980 and then to Sarasota Florida in 1984, where he retired from paid employment.
Dick first saw his beautiful bride to be at a distance while driving around Lake Dale, while it was love at first sight for him, Gloria took a little more convincing. For 5 years Dick pursued Gloria before she finally said, “I do”. The family always enjoyed listening to Dick tell the story of when he first told Gloria he loved her and she said, “well I like you too”, Gloria later confessed that she in fact loved Dick all along but would not tell him as she wanted to make sure he was serious. Their love story was beautiful to witness as they recently celebrated 64 years of marriage.
His children and grandchildren were a source of pride for Dick. He cherished all the trips and vacation time at Pelican Lake. Dick and Gloria loved to travel and went on their “grandbaby” tours every year to visit their children and grandchildren. They drove thousands of miles in their mini van every year. All the grandkids loved their “6-year old” trips and the countless hours spent at Pelican Lake. As the grandkids grew older, he loved sharing in their daily lives.
Dick was loved by countless nieces, nephews, & cousins. He was also a courtesy uncle, dad, and granddad to an ever-growing list of extended family members. Dick always had a twinkle in his eyes, open arms, a welcoming smile and love for all.
Dick was a proud American and served in the Army during the Korean war. He felt fortunate and blessed to serve this great country. He has been an active member of the New Life veteran’s group and he faithfully displayed the Stars and Stripes in front of his home.
Apparent to all who knew him, Dick had a strong faith and practised his faith everyday. He would end most conversations with “God Bless” or have a blessed day. He served God and his church, New Life Lutheran, with anything needed. Dick would often be seen leading or working in a multitude of church projects.
Dick had a fascinating career in the construction industry. He was well loved and respected in his field. He had such a depth of knowledge that allowed him to excel and rise to Vice President of three different companies, Caisson, Case & POMCO. Along the way he made many life-long friends that became part of the family. His last project brought him to Florida from Houston Texas, with the building of the Sunshine Skyway bridge.
Dick spent a great deal of his retired life volunteering on the board of Glen Oaks Manor Drive HOA. Most recently as Maintenance chair and oversaw the rebuilding of the driveways and streets. Dick was a friend to all and cherished all his GOM friendships. Dick always lived by the motto, to have great neighbors you must be one. The outpouring of love received from the Glen Oaks Community confirmed he lived by his motto.
Most people were amazed and in awe at Dick’s computer and technology skills. His thirst for knowledge and constant quest in keeping up to date with all things technical was both a blessing and a curse. He used his 24-tech line (aka Dee) when frustration took over.
Dick’s loss has left a huge hole in countless lives that he touched. His unconditional love, and generous spirit will be missed by all. He was a role model and mentor and friend to all he met. A larger than life and one of a kind we were all so very blessed to love.
