James H. Allison

James Henry Allison, M.D. (age 92) of Gettysburg, PA, Longboat Key, FL and Bradenton, FL passed away on Oct. 12, 2011 in Bradenton. He was the son of the late Rev. Wilbur Moses Allison and the late Laura Ruth (Gemmill) Allison. He was predeceased by his wife, Marian Sheely Allison in 2008.

Dr. Allison was born in New Oxford, PA on Aug. 24, 1919. He graduated from Mt. Carmel High School, Mt. Carmel, PA in 1937. He was a Gettysburg College graduate in 1941 where he was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity. He received his M.D. degree from the University Of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1944 where he was a member of Alpha Kappa Kappa Fraternity. He served residencies at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, PA and St. Joseph's Hospital, Philadelphia, PA. He then spent 2 years in the U.S. Army Medical Corps serving at the 382nd Station Hospital, South Korea.

Dr. Allison first opened his family practice in Emmitsburg, MD in 1948. He began his solo practice in Gettysburg, PA in 1951 and later partnered with the late Charles R. Williams, M.D. and Harold Hand, M.D. He retired to Longboat Key, FL in 1993.

At Gettysburg Hospital, Dr. Allison served terms as Chief of Obstetrics, Chief of Medicine and Chief of Staff in addition to spending 10 years on the Board of Directors of The Gettysburg Hospital. He was a member of the American Board of Family Practice and was named a Life Fellow in the American Association of Family Practice.

Dr. Allison is survived by three children: Barbara Crist of Wyomissing, PA, Jim Allison of Linwood, NJ, and Judi Hudson of Bowie, MD; four grandchildren: Heather Crist Weise, Todd Crist, Andrew Hudson and Valerie Hudson; his two great-grandchildren: Braden and Kinsley Weise; and a sister, Margaret Allison Farrell of York, PA.

Graveside services will take place in Gettysburg, PA in November. National Cremation and Burial Society and Monahan's Funeral Home in Gettysburg, PA are in charge of arrangements.
