George Wayne Rogers was born on October 3, 1952, in Washington, D.C., to Marguerite Louise Rogers and George Henry Rogers. His incredibly loving family owned their own business, the Sycamore Store, which was attached to their family home on MacArthur Blvd, along the Potomac River and C&O canal. He was inspired by his parents’ strong work ethic, that he witnessed every day, and spent his entire adult life mentoring others who shared his attitude, drive, and desire which his parents instilled in him.
A Cum Laude graduate of the University of Maryland, much of George’s passion and studies were centered around the Chesapeake Bay. He remained a life-long learner. George spent his early years fishing in the Potomac River and working summers as a caretaker at the Sycamore Island Club. Life on the water would become a huge part of his life. As a proud owner of many beautiful boats over the years, he loved nothing more than sharing a gorgeous day on the water with family and friends, especially chasing some fish!
In 1976, George married Patricia Maria Fredericks and together they had their amazing son, George (GR2). The bond shared by father and son was one of a kind, remaining best friends until George’s last day.
George began working for GEICO in Chevy Chase, Maryland, while still in high school. Starting in the mailroom at the age of 16 on January 27th, 1969, he was soon taken under the wings of upper management. While there, he not only excelled at the business, but headed up many charitable efforts, encouraging the company to honor the military and touching countless lives with his guidance and support. George retired on July 16th, 2016, as a senior vice president of GEICO.
George was a natural born leader and served on many executive boards including Florida Southern College where he delivered the commencement speech in 2010. He was also a board member of the Chamber of Commerce from 2003-2005.
George married his second wife, Nancy Rose Rogers in 1991. Nancy was always supportive of George’s career and together they created beautiful homes wherever the company needed them, including Maryland, Georgia, Texas, and Florida. They retired in Bradenton, Florida, and built a retirement home that was a dream come true for the two of them.
George and Nancy generously established the John C. Rose Endowed Scholarship at Florida Southern College in honor of Nancy’s late father to enable exceptional pre-med students to achieve their dreams and continue Dr. Rose’s legacy of excellence in medicine.
Despite his demanding job, George always made family a priority. He shared so many special times at Turkey Point in Annapolis at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Pete Garrigus, and family. The plan of the day was usually boating the Chesapeake Bay, eating fresh seafood, having toddies, and chillin’.
George was incredibly proud of his granddaughters, Taylor and Addison. In 2018, George and his wife Nancy booked a Disney cruise for the girls, his son George, and his “catch of a lifetime” wife Liz. While staying in Walt Disney Suite, they cruised the Caribbean for 11 days, having the time of their lives and creating memories that would last forever.
Always wanting to serve and give back, after retirement, George proudly served in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary as a Flotilla Staff Officer (District 7, Flotilla 8-1).
George’s positive outlook and resilience helped him overcome many health challenges, as well as holding up others with hope, guidance, and the ability to carry on during the most difficult of times, living the mantra of “don’t write the story before the story needs to be written”.
After the sad loss of his wife Nancy in 2023, George reconnected with a family friend, Margaret “Maggie” Loflin, who shared his passion for boating, cooking, and facing each day with a positive outlook. They found joy in each other’s company. Soon after finding love, George was diagnosed with cancer for the second time. Maggie was his constant companion and caregiver, known to him as “my angel by my side”. He fought heroically until the end with Maggie’s care along with a tremendous outpouring of love and prayers by his son George, family, and many friends.
George is survived by his son, George William Rogers (wife Elizabeth), Granddaughters Taylor and Addison, sister Linda Garrigus, sister Ann Terlizzi (husband Tom), niece Annette Hilliard (husband Monty), niece Michelle Fletcher (husband Scott), girlfriend Margaret (Maggie) Loflin, first wife and friend Patricia Rogers and extended family.
In lieu of flowers, please feel free to honor George’s memory with a charitable donation to the John C. Rose Endowed Scholarship fund at Florida Southern College.
