Eugene Wesley Curry (Wes), 85, of Sarasota, Florida, passed away quietly at home on November 29th, 2023 surrounded by his family and the support of hospice. Born in Chicago, IL October 14th, 1938 to the late George and Jessie Curry, he was then raised in Springfield, IL along with his older brother, the late George Jr., and his younger brother David. Post high school he attended Trinity College in Connecticut on an academic scholarship, earning two engineering degrees. He quickly discovered that his true calling was not engineering, but writing and editing, which he enjoyed for the rest of his years. He worked for American Hospital Publishing, Inc. in Chicago, IL—the publishing company for the American Hospital Association—as Managing Editor of their journals and books. He met his wife Joanne in Chicago and after they married in 1986, moved to Tampa to work for American College of Physician Executives as Eugene Wesley Curry October 14, 1938 - November 29, 2023 Managing Editor of their publications, until his retirement in 2002, when they moved to Sarasota, Florida. In retirement, he continued his love of writing and editing as he assisted physician executives with their resumes, and edited newsletters for both his condo association and church. He and Joanne remained active in the community (Wes served as board president of his condo association, and usher/greeter/deacon at their church), as well as enjoyed traveling, cruising, and visiting family until she passed away in 2012. Since then, while staying active in the church, he also worked as a crossing guard for the Sarasota Schools, volunteered at Family Promise, gave rides to seniors in the community thru a local program, and was an active member of both S.U.R.E (Sarasota United for Responsibility and Equity) and the local Peace and Justice Network. In his SPARE time, he loved to work crossword puzzles, read every book he could get his hands on, watch sports of any kind, splurge on Starbucks Mocha Frappuccinos and chocolate milkshakes, and dream of how to spend his winnings when “those people up in Tallahassee finally get the numbers right!” He is survived by his brother David Curry of Chicago, IL, daughter Lisa (Cleveland) MacBlane and her husband Kevin of Sarasota, FL, 5 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and several cousins. There will be a celebration of life service at First Congregational UCC Church of Sarasota, 1031 S. Euclid, Sarasota, Fl on January 20th, 2024 at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Congregational UCC Church of Sarasota, S.U.R.E, or Continuum Hospice in Sarasota.
