Thomas Michael Brooks "Captain Tom"

September 16, 1945 – April 26, 2026
Obituary of Thomas Michael Brooks "Captain Tom"
Thomas Michael Brooks of Apollo Beach, Florida, passed away on April 26, 2026, at the age of 80—leaving behind a lifetime of stories, laughter, and a presence that filled every room.

Born on September 16, 1945, in Union City, New Jersey, Tom grew up in a lively household where sports weren’t just encouraged—they were expected. His father worked for the railroad, his mother lovingly kept the household running, and every one of the Brooks boys went on to earn basketball scholarships. His oldest brother, Harry, even made it to the pros with the Baltimore Bullets—so competition at the dinner table was likely fierce.

Tom took his talents to the University of Dayton, where he played as number 20 for the Dayton Flyers from 1963 to 1967. As part of the legendary teams later inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame, he always carried a quiet pride about those years—well, “quiet” may not be the right word.

Tom built his career with Massachusetts Mutual, where he was known for his professionalism and his natural ability to connect with people.

Tom was a devoted family man who believed life was meant to be experienced, preferably on the move. He loved traveling and seeing the world with Cassandra and our Greyhounds—whether crossing the United States, Canada, and Alaska in a motorcoach while promoting the adoption of retired racing dogs, or setting sail on cruises to destinations around the globe. He proudly accomplished his goal of visiting all 55 National Parks—likely with plenty of stories, detours, and a few cigars along the way.

He was incredibly proud of his son, Matthew, and took every opportunity to share that pride with others. Whether following Matthew across the country or telling stories of his accomplishments to anyone who would listen, Tom’s admiration was constant and unmistakable. As one neighbor shared, Tom “couldn’t wait to introduce” his son and spoke often of his success, his work, and his beautiful family.

Known affectionately as “Captain Tom,” thanks to his US Coast Guard Licensed Master Captain certification, he fully embraced the role—especially when there was water, a boat, and an audience involved.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Helen Brooks; his brothers, Harry, William, and Walter; and his sister, Patricia.

He is survived by his wife, Cassandra Brooks; his son, Matthew Brooks and wife Ashley; his grandchildren, Charlotte and Levi; sisters-in-law Mary Brooks and Geri Brooks; former wife Marion Bennett; and many nieces and nephews who will no doubt continue telling his stories.

Tom was the life of every gathering—quick with a joke, never short on conversation, and always ready to turn an ordinary moment into something memorable. If you knew him, you likely laughed with him… and probably heard him from across the room. He also had a gift for making people feel welcome—whether stopping by to check in, sharing stories, or even delivering something as simple as fresh avocados to a neighbor.

He always said he wanted My Way by Frank Sinatra played at his service—and if you ever heard him sing it, you know he meant every word. That song wasn’t just a favorite; it was a reflection of how he lived his life—on his terms, with conviction, humor, and heart.

Family and friends are invited to attend a "Celebration of Life" social at the Brooks’ home in Symphony Isles, Apollo Beach, on Sunday, May 17 from 12 noon-3pm.

Somewhere, we imagine Captain Tom now—on calm waters, with a perfect breeze, a cigar in hand, and already entertaining a brand-new crowd.

He will be deeply missed and never forgotten.
