

Ms. Margie Lou (Hoops) Self, of Sun City Center, Florida passed away peacefully on June 4, 2026 at 68 years of age.
Margie was born in Birmingham, AL and raised in the surrounding area. She is preceded in death by her mother, Edna Lorene (Culwell) West, her father Howard Hoops, her sister Loretta (Moon) Neely and her husband Larry, her daughter Rachael (Mickle) Trott, and her beloved Golden Retriever, Duke.
She leaves behind her sister Vickie Unrue, her nephew Joseph Reid and his partner Lindsay Watkins, her niece Shelly Putnam and her husband Dennis, her granddaughter Madison Trott and her great grandson Houston Trott, and her great nephew Cody Putnam and his wife Shelby Putnam, along with her great, great nephew Sawyer Putnam and her friend and former partner John Schelmbauer.
For many years Margie worked in Senior Leadership in the field of Safety in such prestigious companies as Union Camp and International Paper, where she became their 1st female Vice President of Safety! She also devoted many years in that same field with Honeywell Aeronautics, and WestRock (formerly known as KapStone Paper & Packaging) from which she recently retired. As an extension of her career outside of these Companies, Margie served as an SGE to OSHA and conducted numerous safety audits. During her career, Margie helped protect and save many lives, and conducted safety audits on the Central Park Zoo, and NASA at Kennedy Space Center for their VPP Certification Program. Margie was a trailblazer, a leader and subject matter expert, highly regarded in her field, and an excellent role model."
Margie's family is deeply saddened by their profound loss. They ask for your prayers and understanding as they grieve quietly in privacy.
Margie chose cremation. In accordance with her wishes, her ashes will be released into the Atlantic Ocean as her daughter Rachael’s were, giving her back to our God and Creator.
A celebration of Margie's life will be arranged for family and friends to come together in the future, to share good food, laugh, tell stories, and remember her in love and in the joy she brought into each of our lives.
