Shawn beloved husband, father and grandfather returned to the source of this earth after living a fulfilled and complete life. He married his best friend, Elaine and fathered son Shawn Jr (Chip) and daughter Bonnie. He then married the love of his life Andrea and together they raised Andrea’s sons David Michael Roddy, Mark Roddy and Matthew Roddy. Shawn was a proud grandpa to 6 grandchildren (Mark and Mary’s children, Garth, Emmeline, Melinda, and Bonnie and Bosco’s children, Josh, Craig and Danny) who worship and adore him. He was a great-grandpa to Leila Roddy.
Shawn was raised the middle child of Lawrence and Rose Biehler in Palisades Park, New Jersey. Brothers, Lawrence Jr. and Lamont and son Shawn (Chip) preceded him in death.
Shawn was a passionate and dedicated beacon of life and love. As a boy he knew the meaning of hard work from his early years as a paperboy. His enthusiasm enriched his higher education at Princeton University and on to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Cal Tech where he earned his PhD. He continued his long career as a professor of geophysics at the University of California, Riverside (UCR). Shawn was in his glory when teaching and learning. He had the pleasure of enlightening and being enlightened by thousands of students over the years. Students from freshman to graduate students and beyond created countless everlasting friendships. Together with Robert (Bob) Rieker, Shawn co-founded SAGE (Summer of Applied Geophysical Experience), where highly-motivated students participated in rigorous classroom and field learning taught by some of the best in the field. Shawn’s image wasn’t complete without his SAGE T-shirt!
He continued to ensure the program’s success for years after retirement with a scholarship fund in his name to assist those with his similar passion. He loved teaching and drew true pure joy and life from his students. However, nothing could compare to the depth of his love for his wife, Andrea of nearly 50 years, the love of his life and his adventurous and loving companion. Their experiences and travels were vast and ongoing to his last days, enjoying a special place with Andrea that will be a memory for us all. While it is with deep sadness that we say goodbye, we will forever have Shawn in our hearts and minds.
