Born in Buhl, Minnesota, on the Iron Range, Michael—known to many in his younger years as Tom or Tommy—lived a full and meaningful life rooted in family, faith, music, and service. A 1954 graduate of Martin Hughes High School, his love of music began early. An accomplished trumpet player, he formed a small band, The Jazz Bows, which brought joy and energy to countless high school dances.
Just before his 18th birthday, Michael enlisted in the U.S. Navy. While stationed in Washington, D.C., he was deeply honored to play “Taps” at Arlington National Cemetery, a memory he carried with pride throughout his life. On May 28, 1955, during a short leave, he married Patricia (Pat) Windhurst, beginning a partnership that would last 70 years. Days later, he departed for service with the Sixth Fleet aboard the USS Salem in the Mediterranean, where he played in the Admiral’s Band while also fulfilling his military duties.
Following his Navy service, Michael pursued higher education at the University of Minnesota, later earning his accounting degree from St. Cloud State University. His musical gifts continued to shine as he played trumpet with the U of M Marching Band and occasionally with the Minnesota Orchestra. Professionally, he held positions at Doughboy Industries, Larson Boat Company, and Sunds Defibrator, where he found great fulfillment in his role as Vice President and CFO.
Michael’s faith was a central part of his life. As a member of Pax Christi Catholic Church, he served on the financial council and, though not a choir member, was known for his strong and beautiful voice that filled the church during hymns and responses. Many fellow parishioners often commented on the sincerity and beauty of his singing.
He also enjoyed his membership at the Dakota County Gun Club, where he dedicated time to promoting safety and community through events such as youth shoots, Ladies Days, and deer rifle sight-ins in preparation for the hunting season.
More than his career or accomplishments, Michael will be remembered for his devotion to his family. He loved deeply and unconditionally cherishing time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His presence was a source of strength and comfort, and his life was a testament to kindness, dedication, and love.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Lillian (Savor) Larson, and his baby sister, Karen. He is survived by his beloved wife Pat; children Emily Blackwell (Kent Doble), Michael (Phyllis) Larson, and David (Karen Schultz) Larson; nine grandchildren, Eryn Blackwell (Max) Segar, Alec Blackwell, Justin Blackwell, Brandon Blackwell, Thomas (Kelsey) Larson, Bryan Larson, Holden Schultz-Larson, Samantha Doble, and Nick (Jenn) Doble; and five great-grandchildren, Amara Larson, Ella Larson, Luca Segar, Luna Segar, and Leilani Blackwell.
A Funeral Mass will be held On Thursday, September 18, 2025 at Pax Christi Catholic Church, 12100 Pioneer Trail, Eden Prairie, MN, with visitation at 10:00 a.m. and Mass at 11:00 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Robert Wotypka.
Michael’s life was a beautiful blend of faith, music, service, and family. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy of love and peace will continue to live on in all who knew him.
