Glen “David” Whale, 85, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2026, with his beloved wife, Barbara Ann “Barbie” Whale, by his side. While his family mourns his loss, they also celebrate a life defined by love, service, generosity, friendship, and devotion to family.
Born on June 22, 1941, in Overgaard, Arizona, David spent his childhood in Arizona, Washington, Oregon, Oklahoma, and Texas. He was proud of his Choctaw heritage through his grandfather, a connection that was an important part of his identity. He graduated from Eastmont High School in Wenatchee, Washington, and on his birthday following graduation, enlisted in the United States Army. David served as both a paratrooper and airframe repairman. His military service remained a source of pride throughout his life.
Over the years, David worked in a variety of roles, including construction laborer and VFW gambling manager, helping direct VFW funds toward local causes. Yet his favorite role was that of a Master-Level Retiree, devoting his time to family, friends, and discovering new ways to rest, relax, and enjoy life.
David enjoyed woodworking, especially crafting rocking horses and toys for his granddaughters. An avid reader and gifted storyteller, he loved sharing memories, listening to others' stories, and turning everyday conversations into lasting connections.
Above all, David loved his family. His favorite person was his wife, Barbie. Their story began when his future brother-in-law, Loren, brought him home from the Army for Christmas (and Barbie decorated the house with mistletoe). Together they built a home, raised a family, and created a lifetime of cherished memories. Throughout every season of life, he was her devoted husband, closest companion, and loving partner.
David cherished being a father, but he especially treasured his role as Papa. His granddaughters held a special place in his heart, and he delighted in spending time with them. Whether offering a ride, lending a hand, or simply showing up when needed, David demonstrated his love through action.
His kindness extended far beyond his family. David's philosophy was simple: "Everybody is a friend he hasn't met yet." He had a gift for making people feel welcome and never missed an opportunity to start a conversation, share a story, or make a new friend. Truly, he never met a stranger.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Aleita Bell Houchens and David Compton Whale; his infant sister, Hila; and his brother, KG.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbie Whale; daughters Michelle Hopewell (Paul) and Tanya Whale; son Shawn Whale (Jill); granddaughters Isabelle, Olivia, and AvaMarie Hopewell; siblings Linda Whale De Vargas and Jerry Whale; and countless extended family members and friends.
David will be remembered for the people he loved, the stories he shared, the toys he crafted, the service he gave, and the countless ways he showed up for those around him. His family takes comfort in knowing that his kindness, laughter, and love will continue through the generations he helped shape.
Rest easy, Glen David. Your watch is over, your service is honored, and your stories live on.
A service celebrating his life will be held on Thursday October 29, 2026, at Minnehaha Communion Lutheran Church, 4101 37th Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55406.
