with lung cancer that reoccurred and metastasized to his brain after beating it eight years
earlier. In the end, his 81 year old heart could no longer fight the fight.
Born in Teaneck, New Jersey on March 23,1945, Larry spent his childhood in Jersey City, a
place he loved deeply.
After graduating from Xavier High School in New York City, Larry spent seven years with the
Society of Jesus studying to become a Catholic priest. Ultimately, he decided the priesthood
was not his calling and enrolled at Georgetown University, where he graduated in 1968. He later
earned his J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law in 1973.
While on spring break as a student at Georgetown, Larry met the love of his life, Linda (Smiley)
Whipple, and proposed just three days later. They married in 1969 and spent 50 wonderful
years together in New Jersey, raising their two children in Madison. In 2020, Larry and Linda
retired to Cary, NC, to be closer to family.
Larry spent his career practicing law in many capacities. Whether in private practice as general
counsel to Seton Hall University, the prosecutor’s office, or various corporate roles, he was
always proud to carry the Whipple name with him. Everything he accomplished professionally
was, in many ways, a tribute to his late father, the Honorable Lawrence A. Whipple Sr.
Larry loved traveling the world, preferably by cruise ship. He was an avid bridge player and
never passed up a chance to visit a casino for a game of blackjack. A devoted sports fan, he
faithfully cheered on the New York Giants, the Seton Hall Pirates, and, most enthusiastically, his
grandchildren’s teams. Later in life, Larry developed a deep passion for politics and never
missed an opportunity to share his knowledge with anyone willing to listen.
To know Larry was to know that family was everything to him. He was preceded in death by his
parents, Lawrence and Virginia Whipple, his sister Nancy Smith and his brother-in-law George
Berkner.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Linda; his children, Trey and Molly Whipple, and
Amy and Ryan Toland; and his six grandchildren, who were the greatest treasures of his life:
Alec Whipple, John Whipple, Ryan Toland, Ford Whipple, Tucker Toland, and Caroline Whipple.
Larry is also survived by his siblings, Doc (Lois), Ginny Berkner, and John (Mary), as well as
cousins, nieces, and nephews. Larry is also survived by many dear friends with whom he
shared countless memories and whom he treasured deeply.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at the Chapel of the
Immaculate Conception on the campus of Seton Hall University.
To honor Larry, donations may be made in his memory to Transitions LifeCare in Raleigh, NC, https://www.transitionslifecare.org/donate/,whose care and support meant so much to the Whipple family during Larry’s final days.
