Elma Berry Bowen, known lovingly as Boots, went to be with her Lord and Savior on the morning of February 23, 2026, at the age of 95. Born in 1930, she was a lifelong resident of Raleigh and a beloved sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.
She is survived by her three children: Brenda Lipa (Helm), Nancy Powers (the late Frank Powers), and Laura Kury (John). Boots was a proud grandmother to Gregory Lipa (Alex) and Katy Powers, and a great-grandmother to Perry and Daisy Lipa.
She was one of six siblings. Her twin sister, Clara Godwin, known as Toots, survives her. Boots was preceded in death by her sister, Sue Walden (Ed), and her brothers, Jake Berry (Thelma), Ansel Berry (Gene), and Dan Berry. Dan’s wife, Lorraine Berry, survives, as well as many dear nieces and nephews.
Boots was a graduate of Needham Broughton High School, Class of 1949, and Peace College. She retired after more than 30 years of service with the State of North Carolina. A devoted fan of North Carolina State University, she loved knitting, sewing, drawing, listening to music, working in the yard, refinishing furniture, and working crossword and jigsaw puzzles. She remained interested in the lives and families of her nieces and nephews, continuing to email and correspond throughout the years. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
A private family service will be held at a later date. The family would like to express their gratitude for your prayers and support.
