Ben Sinclair Hynson, of Cary, beloved father, devoted husband, and dear friend to many, passed away peacefully at home on November 12, 2021. Born September 14, 1956, he was the loving son of the late Warren Newell Hynson and Eleanor Wilson Hynson. Ben was raised in Manassas, Virginia, and graduated from Greensboro College where he played basketball and golf.
Ben is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Miller Hynson, and two sons, Warren (Janie) and Nicklaus (Katie). He is also survived by three grandchildren; his brother, Ken (Cathy), of Syracuse, New York; his sisters-in-law, Clara Miller of Amelia Island, Florida and Jane (Ken) MacDonald of Greenville, North Carolina; his brother-in-law, David (Kathy) Miller, of Amelia Island, Florida; and six nieces and nephews.
A PGA Master Golf Professional and Life Member of the PGA Carolinas Section, Ben served as the Head Golf Professional and then Director of Golf at MacGregor Downs Country Club for twenty-five years, beginning in 1987. He was the Director of Instruction at Lochmere Golf Club and a Titleist Representative from 2013 to 2021.
Ben was the recipient of numerous PGA awards and honors, including the 2001 Horton Smith Award and the 2003 Bill Strausbaugh Award. In 2009, he was named Carolinas PGA Golf Professional of the Year. Ben was also named a Golf Digest Top-10 Golf Instructor five times. He loved teaching golf to people of all ages and abilities and was particularly fond of his students in the North Carolina Special Olympics.
In addition to his career in golf, Ben found a second calling later in life raising millions of dollars as a volunteer auctioneer for charity organizations, including the Lung Cancer Initiative and the Boys & Girls Club of Nassau County, Florida.
Ben was an avid sports fan and loved NC State athletics. He enjoyed traveling, especially to the North Carolina mountains and Amelia Island, Florida. Above all, Ben cherished being with family and friends, his love for them and life unconditional.
Details about a celebration of Ben’s life are forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, Ben requested donations be made to the Lung Cancer Initiative, the Boys & Girls Club of Nassau County, Florida, and the Special Olympics of North Carolina.
A Celebration of Life will be held at MacGregor Downs Country Club on Monday December 6 at 2:00pm, followed by a private family dinner at the club.
