Vernon Lester Herron

Vern grew up in Newton Falls, Ohio, and graduated from high school there in 1955.

After serving a stint in the US Army from 1955 to 1957, he returned to the area and then moved to Rootstown, Ohio, with his first wife, Sue Ann Scheidly. It was there that their three children were raised.

After his divorce, Vern was active in the Parents Without Partners organization where he particularly enjoyed the dance events, and had the honor of being the PWP Man of the Year in 1979. It was also through PWP that he met his second wife, the former Margaret “Muggie” Schaefer. The couple were married on July 3, 1982, at First Christian Church in Ravenna, Ohio, the family's church home for many years.

Vern was a machinist by trade and worked for Flint-Kote in Ravenna and retired from Rotek in Aurora. After retirement, he and Muggie enjoyed the snowbird life, traveling south to Florida for the winters and spending their summers at local Ohio campgrounds, where they made many memories with their grandchildren, teaching them to fish in the ponds and cook on the campfire. Those special snowbird road trips often included visits to kids in Virginia and Texas, and vacations at Myrtle Beach with siblings.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Muggie; two sons, Steven (Shawn) and Timothy (Drema); a daughter, Faith (Duffy) Johnson; a stepdaughter, Brenda Fohner; his sister, Liz Manson; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Gladys Vorreiter Herron; a stepdaughter, Elaine Mikesina; brothers Ronald, Robert and William; and a sister, Kathy.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Aug. 2, 2026, at the Tower Lodge at Ravenna, Ohio, City Park, with a meal following; and at 1 p.m. Nov. 6, 2026, at the Club House at Mary Lu Mobile Home Park in Port Charlotte, Florida, with a meal following.
