Ronald G. Watson, beloved husband, father, brother, teacher, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 1, shortly after celebrating his 77th birthday. A lifelong learner and generous soul, Ron’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and unwavering dedication to others.
Born and raised in Ardmore, Oklahoma, “Ronnie” grew up with three brothers and his close-knit group of cousins, affectionately known collectively as “The Dirty Dozen”. He graduated Salutatorian from Plainview High School with a passion for math and history, which remained a constant throughout his life.
Ron went on to pursue a degree in Education at East Central State in Oklahoma. During a transfer semester at Westfield State College in 1968, he met the love of his life, Donna. After graduating from East Central, he returned to Massachusetts to complete his master’s degree at Westfield State College. He was also a proud member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity.
Ron’s teaching career began at Agawam Junior High School, where he shared his enthusiasm for learning while working part-time at Columbia Bikes and Big Y. He later brought his strong work ethic and attention to detail to Penske Truck Leasing before eventually continuing his teaching journey at Sabis International Charter School in Springfield, MA, inspiring generations of students with his love of numbers and education.
A true history buff, Ron had a deep admiration for The Alamo and collected antique toy soldiers depicting many famous historical battles. He was a fan of Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies, truly appreciating the music behind both. He is also known for his love of Pi Day (March 14th), enjoying old westerns and his pride for his Oklahoma roots (Boomer Sooner!).
In retirement, Ron embraced the snowbird lifestyle, spending winters in Englewood, Florida, and summers on Otis Reservoir in East Otis, Massachusetts. The lake became a beloved gathering place where he welcomed friends and family with warmth, laughter, and always a well-chosen beverage. He also enjoyed Legos, puzzles, reading, and a good game of cribbage. But it was his kindness that truly defined him. He gave freely of his time and spirit, tutoring students and mentoring former pupils with whom he maintained lasting bonds.
Above all, Ron’s greatest joy came from the love he shared with his family. While he was deeply committed to his students and their success, nothing surpassed the pride and affection he held for his wife and children. He cherished every moment spent together—whether cheering at sporting events, enjoying live theater, or exploring new places through travel. These shared experiences became treasured memories, reflecting the warmth, laughter, and lasting joy that defined his life at home.
Ron is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Donna (Plante); his children, David (Amanda Bell) of East Longmeadow, MA, and Sarah of St. Petersburg, FL;, Connor, son of Amanda, whom Ron embraced as family; his brothers, Kevin D. Calley and his wife Tara of Kansas, and Charles F. Williams of Oklahoma; and his nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Reverend David L. Gordon II, and his mother, Doris S. Calley.
Ron’s life was a testament to kindness, learning, and commitment. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Red Cross, MSPCA, or your local animal shelter. A celebration of life will be planned for a future date in Massachusetts.
