
Joe was born on December 12, 1943 to Joseph E. Wise Sr. and Julia Wise in Queens, NY. He was a graduate of Aviation High School (1961), and went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree at New York Institute of Technology (1965).
After graduating from college he served for 6 months in the Navy Air Reserve. Upon returning to New York he started his nearly 3 decade long career with the NYPD. During his time at NYPD, Joe worked with TPF (Tactical Patrol), taught law at the Police Academy and served in numerous precincts throughout Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens. Joe earned the ranks of Sergeant and Lieutenant, ultimately ending his career as a Lieutenant in the NYPD Intelligence Division.
Joe was a 45 year resident of Hauppauge, NY where he was active in youth and adult soccer programs, coaching and playing with several teams. Over the years he had numerous hobbies. He and his wife Joann bred and raised National Champion Alaskan Malamutes. Joe loved his home and was passionate about his many DIY home improvement projects.
After his NYPD career ended in 1993, Joe worked in Private Investigation for 10 years before fully retiring in 2003. At this time Joe was able to fulfill his long time dream of becoming a full fledged ‘snow bird’ and spending 6 months each in Long Island and Southwest Florida. During his retirement years, Joe became an avid golfer. The love of golf remained with him for the rest of his life.
Joe was a resident of Spinnaker Point in Punta Gorda, FL. He loved his community, becoming a long time board member, on which he served for 10 years as President.
Joe will be remembered for his trademark sense of humor, his loyalty, and dedication to family. He had many friends and was much loved.
Joe was predeceased by his mother Julia and his father Joseph. He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 59 years JoAnn, his son Joseph, and his siblings Judy, Thomas and James. He is also survived by his numerous nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved.
A funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Miraculous Medal (Ridgewood, Queens) in January (date to be determined) with a small private burial service for immediate family being held the same day at nearby Maple Grove Cemetery.
A separate ‘Celebration of Life’ will be held at his longtime home/sanctuary in Hauppauge, NY in the summer of 2025 (date to be determined).
