John J Gillan

Born in a Philadelphia naval hospital, John lived and worked all over the world but spent most of his life in Florida. He proudly served in the US Air Force for eight years as a Sergeant and a photographer. As a photojournalist, he specialized in editorial reporting and the 4x5 portrait. John was chosen to photograph numerous dignitaries including former US Presidents Nixon and Carter, and Queen Elizabeth.

Upon leaving the military, John and his new wife Theresa launched John Gillan Photography, Inc. Over a 35-year period, John created award-winning custom corporate work and fine arts photography for major organizations, architects, interior designers, advertising agencies, publications, and collectors worldwide. Photographic collections include Ted Smallwood Store-Old Indian Trading Post, Places In Time, Life at 100 and Native Americans. He was heavily inspired by his close friend and mentor, the noted French artist Lucien Clergue, particularly in some of his more private and experimental works. John is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Theresa (“T”); son Michael and daughter-in-law Marisa Gillan of Cooper City, FL; sister Judith Ann Gillan (Judy) of Havana, FL; and his devoted companion Beau. He will be missed by his many friends and acquaintances worldwide who were touched by his sense of humor, his big heart, and his sensitive, insightful nature. John always took pleasure in thinking about strangers who would be touched in some way by seeing his work.

John was very excited about the impending birth of his first grandchild. Although he left us before she arrived, he wanted her to know that he loves her.

He was preceded in death by his parents John J. and Dorothy M. Gillan of Havana, FL.

A celebration of life will be held in Florida at a future date TBD. Interment will be at the National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL on December 5, 2024 at 1:00 pm.
