Born on May 11, 1932, in Hamburg, Germany, Manfred’s early years were shaped by the turmoil of war. Seeking safety, he moved to the Black Forest, where he spent his school years.
After the war, he returned to Hamburg and began training for a career in the hospitality industry. However, his true dream was to soar among the clouds as an airline pilot—a dream he pursued with relentless perseverance after emigrating to the United States.
From 1954 to 1956, Manfred served in the U.S. Army in Alaska. It was during this time that while on leave he met the greatest love of his life.
Manfred met Eleonore Flick on a blind date. Their connection was instant and deep, leading to a beautiful marriage on August 17, 1957. For 67 wonderful years, they built a life together filled with love, adventure, and family before Eleonore’s passing on April 22, 2024.
Manfred and Eleonore first built their lives in New York, eventually settling in Stony Brook on Long Island. There, they enjoyed sailing the waters of Long Island Sound, with summers anchored in Block Island Harbor—a cherished family tradition. Their home was always filled with laughter, music, and the warmth of family gatherings.
Upon retirement, they moved to Punta Gorda, where they became active members of the Isles Yacht Club, embarking on many local cruises. One of their most memorable adventures was a six-month sailing journey from Punta Gorda to Long Island aboard their beloved catamaran, Paloma.
Following hurricane Charlie, they joined the Charlotte Harbor yacht club. They particularly enjoyed Friday evening dinners and Christmas cruises to South seas plantation.
Their love for travel knew no bounds; they were both Four-Star Holland America Mariners and spent many summers in Germany and Austria, sharing their proud heritage with their grandchildren.
Manfred’s greatest pride and joy was his family. The marriages of his children—Robert, Katherine, and Richard—brought him much-loved grandchildren, who became the next great loves of his life. In recent years, his joy only deepened with the arrival of great-grandchildren, ensuring that his legacy of love, adventure, and perseverance would continue for generations to come.
To those who knew him, Manfred was an incredible force—determined, loving, and full of life. His presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Auf Wiedersehen, Manfred.
To fly west is a flight we all must take for a final check.
