I played many high school basketball games that Bob officiated in. Each game when I saw Bob was referee, I knew it was going to be a fun game, win or lose. he was truly one of a kind, he had a special talent with young kids, fair, honest and witty,

My sympathies to the family, we lost a great one here, please cherish the good memories he left in all the young people he touched, we need more Bob's in this world. I graduated in 1975 and can remember him vividly yet today how he treated me. What a fun loving man.

Bob grew up in Preston with my mother Mary Black.  When he and his Mom moved to Iowa City, he and my Dad played football at City High. 

We were good friends with he and Rosie.  His sons Bobby and Danny had MD.  
I last talked to him several months ago.  
He was a good friend to our family and when he was a scout for the Minnesota Twins , he lived with my Uncle Neal Black.  

The world was a better place with Bob in it. 
He was a kind , funny man.

I met Bob, Rosie, Bobby, and Jay at Hospital School at the University of Iowa when I was orderly in 67-69 and Social worker 69-71. He and Rosie had the boys at Hospital School during the day. They were such wonderful devoted parents to two boys with a Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. They would bring the boys to class and therapy every day. Both boys died in their early 20s. 
When I started officiating in the late 70’s, Bob and I hadn’t seen each other since the boys died. Bob welcomed me into the Association. 
He was a legend in Iowa high school  football and basketball officiating. I never worked varsity with Bob. But I remember my first Jr high Basketball game with Bob. He towered over the little skinny 7th graders.
He asked for captains. He looked down at one pair of the captains and barked “Do you foul?” Both kids looked terrified and shook their head No. He did the same with other two captains and got the same wide eyed No.
“Good” Bob said, “We”ll have a great game” as he put his arms around the kids and smiled. He was a great man, father, husband…and has a World Series ring from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
