Paul passed away recently at the age of 88. He was born in 1935 in upstate New York to Henry and Rosemary Mohr. He is survived by Nora, his wife of 46 years, his daughter Gretchen Haney (William), and son Paul H. Mohr (Natalie), and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter Heidi Longwell.
Paul graduated third in his class from Union College in Schenectady, NY in 1957 as a Mechanical Engineer. He was an officer in Kappa Sigma Social Fraternity. He started his engineering career at GeneraI Electric and in 1960 he moved to Arizona to work in AiResearch in Phoenix. During his career, he participated in several projects including Project Apollo, and was Lead Pneumatics Engineer for the Boeing 767 airplane. He worked on many other designs including one prototype unique enough to be displayed in the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum.
He raised and showed purebred dogs at AKC Dog Shows. He was granted a license to judge several breeds and served as AKC Delegate for the Superstition Kennel Club in Mesa, AZ.
After retiring in 1992, Paul volunteered for the Boy Scouts of America, Grand Canyon Council. Like his son Paul, he was an Eagle Scout and later was awarded the Silver Beaver Scouters Award after serving as District Commissioner.
Noble Effort was the name of the log home he designed and built in Nutrioso, AZ. He became active in community affairs in Nutrioso, helping to renovate the old school built in the year he was born. Later he collected signatures from the Nutrioso Volunteer Fire Department and served as its Chairman of the Board.
Since his college days, Paul was interested in sports cars. Particularly European ones. As soon as his first paycheck was in the bank, he was sitting behind the wheel of a shiny black Austin Healey with red sides and interior. He met a neighbor who turned out to be Brock Yates with whom he became good friends. Paul attended the first Ontario 500 and the first limited States Formula One Grand Prix at Riverside.
Throughout his life, Paul enjoyed several adventures. He climbed the Great Wall of China, climbed the Washington Monument, the Eiffel Tower, the Gateway Arch in St Louis, Victoria Peak in Hong Kong, hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, rode a boat up to Niagara Falls, canoed down the Colorado River and had drinks at the Raffles in Singapore in honor of Hemingway. He raced dune buggies in Mexico and dug clams in the Sea of Cortez. He haggled for merchandise at the bazaar in Istanbul. He had a great life.
