Born on November 6, 1956, at St Mary's hospital in Tucson, Arizona, Michael was the son of Michael A. Cecil Sr. and Gretchen Schultz. He grew up alongside his siblings Trude, Larry, Jennifer, and Robert. His childhood was marked by both joy and hardship. He graduated from Palo Verde High School and went on to build a life deeply rooted in the Tucson community.
In 1976 Michael married the love of his life, Linda Geffre, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Tucson. What began as a young love grew into a lifelong partnership spanning nearly 50 years. Through life's joys and challenges, Michael and Linda remained devoted to one another. Together, they raised four children Michael “Mick”, Katherine, Tammy, and Samantha and watched their family grow to include fourteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Michael possessed an extraordinary gift for finding humor in life's everyday moments, even during its most difficult chapters. With a clever turn of phrase, a perfectly timed practical joke, or a running gag that might span decades, he had a way of making life's journey a little lighter for everyone around him. His wit was quick, his humor often mischievous, but never at the expense of another. He understood that laughter could bring people together, ease a difficult moment, and turn an ordinary day into a cherished memory; laughter was his love language.
He truly never met a stranger. Whether greeting an old friend or striking up a conversation with someone he had just met, Michael had a remarkable ability to make people feel welcome. His kindness was genuine, his humor infectious, and his friendships lasting.
Michael was a familiar and welcoming presence at Tucson's beloved DeAnza and Apache Drive-In Theaters, where he served as manager for nearly two decades. During those years, he became part of a cherished Tucson tradition, helping generations of families enjoy evenings at the movies beneath the desert sky.
Perhaps nowhere was Michael's generous spirit more evident than in the joy he brought to children. His love of imagination had roots in his own childhood, when he spent time at the Tucson costume shop operated by his maternal grandparents. Those early experiences helped inspire a lifelong passion for costumes, creativity, and bringing a little magic into the world.
At his home in South Tucson, Michael transformed ordinary holidays into extraordinary experiences. His elaborate Halloween displays offered playful frights and unforgettable surprises, while his Christmas celebrations brought the wonder of Santa Claus to life. Year after year, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and neighborhood children shared in the excitement of his creations.
To Michael, it never mattered whose child was standing before him. Every child deserved a moment of wonder, a reason to smile, and a memory worth keeping.
Michael found his greatest happiness surrounded by children's laughter. Through the traditions he created, the friendships he nurtured, and the love he shared so freely, he gave generations of families something they would carry with them long after the decorations were put away.
Above all, Michael's greatest devotion was to Linda and the family they built together. His legacy lives on in the love they shared, the children they raised, and the generations that followed.
Michael will be remembered for his boundless humor, his kindness to everyone he encountered, and his extraordinary ability to bring happiness into the lives of others.
Michael is survived by his beloved wife, Linda (Geffre) Cecil; his four children, Michael, Katherine, Tammy, and Samantha; 13 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; his mother Gretchen Schultz, and siblings Jennifer (Boyce), Larry, and Robert (Blum).
He was preceded in death by his father Michael A. Cecil (Sr), sister Trude (Lleonart), and grandchild Hennessy(Cuen).
The world is a little quieter without his laughter, but infinitely richer for having known it.
