Fred Martin Nevill

Fred Martin Nevill, age 78, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born on October 22, 1947, in Bonham, Texas, Fred lived a life marked by service, adventure, intellectual curiosity, entrepreneurship, and a deep dedication to Houston's cultural community.

A proud Texan with an insatiable curiosity about the world, Fred's life was anything but ordinary. As a freshman at Rice University, his studies were interrupted when he was drafted into the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. While preparing to be deployed to Vietnam, Fred was selected to join Operation Deep Freeze, providing support for medical services at McMurdo Station in Antarctica. It was the first of many adventures that would define his life.

Following his military service, Fred returned to Rice University and earned his bachelor's degree. He later built a successful career in antique appraisal and sales, founding Nevill Antiques in Houston's River Oaks neighborhood. Known for his expertise, keen eye, and extensive knowledge, Fred became a respected figure in the antiques community. His work led to a variety of unique experiences, including an appearance as a featured expert on Antiques Roadshow.

Fred believed strongly in giving back and devoted countless hours to organizations that enriched the cultural life of Houston. Throughout the years, he served as Chairman of the Board of the Houston Boychoir, Chairman of the Board of Opera in the Heights, and President of the Board of Directors of the Eleanor Searle Whitney Foundation. His leadership and generosity helped strengthen organizations dedicated to music, performing arts, education, and cultural enrichment.

Travel was one of Fred's greatest passions. He visited all seven continents and delighted in learning about different cultures and histories. Among all the places he explored, Japan and Italy held a special place in his heart.

Above all else, Fred cherished his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 26 years, Josie Nevill; his sister, Nan N Tibbs; his children, Heather Brown, Adam Nevill, Josephine Yu, and Andrew Ruchard; and his treasured grandchildren, Russ Brown, Neely Nevill, Finley Ruchard, and Chance Yu. He also leaves behind countless friends, colleagues, and fellow arts supporters whose lives were enriched by his friendship, generosity, and wit.

Fred will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered. He possessed a rare gift for making life more interesting, and those who knew him were all the better for it. The world will not be quite as interesting without him.

A small family service will be held in Bonham, Texas.
