It is with sadness we note the passing of Don Smith born 8/1/1928. Don was from Martha’s Vineyard and was the son of Hollis and Doris Smith of Vineyard Haven, Ma. Don passed 12/26/23 at the age of 95 in Micco, Fla. Don was a Marine and served in WWII and Korea. He served as Commander of VFW post 9261 on the Vineyard.
Don led a full life and was a commercial fisherman for many years and had a 100 ton Captains licence. Fishing in the New England waters and the Gulf of Mexico. Don identified as a well read individual with an interest in history and geography. He lived and worked on Martha’s Vineyard, Ma., Miami, Fla., Morrisville Vt., Tarpon Springs Fla., Nokomis, Fla., and Barefoot Bay, Fla.
He was predeceased by his wife Patricia Flanders of Chilmark, Ma. and his long time companion Alice Re of Chicago, Ill., and Nokomis, Fla. He is survived by his children Hollis, Jeanne, Robin and Russell their spouses and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He will be missed by those who knew him and will be remembered for his quite and caring ways, and sense of humor.
