Born on September 26, 1935 in Fusagasugá, Colombia, Alfredo was raised in a large family by his hard-working mother. An inveterate and diligent worker, Alfredo immigrated to the United States in 1970 and obtained a job his first week in New York City with the Weinstock Lamp Company. In 1971, he joined the Consolidated Edison Company of New York where he worked as an electrician for over 20 years until his retirement in 1993. He could and would fix anything and everything he got his hands on!
A man of deep faith, Alfredo was actively involved in his church, including the Paraclete Prayer Group at Good Shepherd Catholic Parish. He enjoyed reading his Bible, listening to music, and writing both secular and religious poetry. He had an affinity for bowling, gardening, swimming, taking photos and videos of family and friends, playing games, coloring, and traveling, with a special fondness for his trip to the Holy Land.
He was preceded in death by his parents Elpidia Fandiño de Gil and Angel Custodio Gil, and his eight siblings, Francisco, Carmen, Joaquin, Arturo, Angel, Rosaura, Lucila, and Enrique, his twin. He is survived by his wife Luz Marina Rodriguez, and his children Alberto Gil, Claudia Gil, and Elizabeth Gil, PhD. Alfredo valued education and was exceedingly proud of his three children.
Alfredo had an endearing sense of humor and a love for humanity. He often did what was unexpected. He leaves loved ones with memories of charitable acts toward those in need, rounds of Connect Four ending in a tie even after every slot was filled, and spreading the message that “GOD LOVES YOU, AND SO DO I” – a message he also shared through a stamp he had made.
The family is deeply appreciative for the care and compassion shown by Alfredo’s devoted friends Carol and Bob Schonefeld, his fierce advocates Valerie Chessman, RN, and Richard Mora, Faith Daza, NP, and the VITAS hospice team, among others.
A Memorial Mass will be held for Alfredo on Saturday, June 17, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 5900 Oleander Drive, Orlando, FL 32807, with no visitation prior. Alfredo’s remains were scattered in the ocean he so loved.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Alfredo's memory can be made to CaringKind or to the Alzheimer's Association.
