

Jay Thomas Benton, 78, of St. James City, Florida formerly of Birmingham, Alabama passed away peacefully on April 29, 1926. He was born February 27, 1948, in Birmingham, Alabama to William Dallas Benton and Elizabeth Rimes Benton.
Jay was an Eagle Scout, a member of the Pine Island Boat Club, the American Medical Association, the Alabama Medical Society, and a Fellow of the American College of Gynecology.
Jay graduated from Auburn University and the University of Alabama in Birmingham Medical School. He practiced obstetrics and gynecology at Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham. While in middle and high school, Jay was active in his Boy Scout troop, and was awarded its highest rank of Eagle Scout. Jay was an avid hunter while living in Alabama, and loved sailing and boating. He also loved the mountains, waterfalls, and hiking. For several years, he and Lisa spent summers in the north Georgia Mountains.
Jay was preceded in death by his parents, William Dallas Benton and Elizabeth Rimes Benton. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Elizabeth “Lisa” (Anderson) Benton; a son, William Thomas Benton; nieces and nephews, Kate (Amling) Mann, Suzi (Amling) McKibben, Brad Benton and Beth Benton; 7 great nieces and nephews; and a brother, Lee Rimes Benton and his wife Sharon (Brenneman) Benton.
A Celebration of life will take place on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at Pine Island United Methodist Church. Details to follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to The Appalachian Trail Conservancy, the American Parkinson Disease Association, the Calusa Land Trust.
