After serving in the Air Force, he attained his A.S. from Dean Junior College and received his B.S. and MEd from Springfield College. He spent the majority of his professional career as a professor at Salem State College, Salem, MA where he taught Sports and Leisure Studies.
Grant—known affectionately to some as Chip, General, or Poppy—will be remembered for his steadfast dedication to coaching and his gift for bringing out the best in others. He devoted himself to coaching a variety of sports, most notably the men’s tennis team. An accomplished tennis player in his own right, Grant brought the same discipline, enthusiasm, and competitive spirit to the tennis court throughout his life. He continued playing and serving as a leader of the tennis community at the Villages of Country Creek in Estero, FL until late in life, inspiring teammates and friends with his commitment, camaraderie, and love of the game. His guidance, encouragement, kind, and generous spirit left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Grant is survived by his sons, Mitchell (Katie) and Randal Longley (Jeanine); grandchildren Spencer, Sarah, Rebecca, and Cristina Longley; brother Mark Longley (Peggy); and partner Jane Walker . Grant was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Marie, and sisters Merry and Sandy.
Grant will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
A celebration of Grant’s life will take place in December. A military burial will be held on December 11, 2026 at Sarasota National Cemetery in FL in honor of his service in the Air Force. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Grant’s name be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation.
