Giles Geiger Tompkins

Giles Geiger Tompkins, a devoted husband, brother, father, grandpa, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2024, in Fort Myers, Florida. He was born on April 1, 1939, in Lake City, Florida.

Giles was the beloved son of Dewey Tompkins and Daisy Geiger Tompkins. He is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Darlene Pointer Tompkins; his daughters Amy Tompkins and Shannon (Scott) Cochran; his stepson David (Cara) Pointer; his sisters Barbara Tompkins Brown and Elaine Tompkins Pannell; his grandsons Jerimiah Burchfield, Gabriel Cochran, Joshua Pointer; his granddaughter Amanda Pointer and adopted granddaughter Hailey Traver; his sister-in-law Gail (Bill) Keel and brother-in-law Harold (Christine) Roberts; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents Dewey Tompkins and Daisy Tompkins, sisters Sara (Skippy) Swanger Pittman and Wilma Tompkins Wilson, as well as his stepson Darren Pointer.

Giles' educational journey was marked by notable achievements. He graduated from Moore Haven High School, earned an Associate Degree in Accounting at Palm Beach Junior College, and completed his Bachelor of Arts in Accounting from Ball State University.

From 1957 to 1961, Giles served his country with distinction in the United States Army, stationed in Belgium and France. His career was equally illustrious, spanning diverse roles such as working on a dairy farm, operating a dragline to dig canals, and serving as a bellman and valet at the Ambassador Hotel in Palm Beach and the Poland Springs House in Maine during his college years. Giles found his calling in accounting, working as an accountant at Ernst & Ernst, an auditor for the Interstate Commerce Commission, a military comptroller for the United States Army at Fort Harrison Finance Center in Indianapolis, IN and at Camp Zama, Japan, and later as an enrolled agent at H&R Block.

A Christian, Giles was a faithful member of the Episcopal Church since childhood, serving as a treasurer and chalice bearer at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Indianapolis, IN, and at St. John's Episcopal Church in Speedway, IN. He recently found his forever church home at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Fort Myers, Florida. He contributed his talents to numerous Cursillo retreats in Indianapolis and was a 33rd Degree Mason, Murat Shriner, and Scottish Rite Mason. His commitment to community service extended to his lifetime membership in Delta Sigma Pi and the American Society of Military Comptrollers (ASMC).

Giles' hobbies and interests were as rich and varied as his professional life. He was an avid reader, a skilled woodworker, a passionate fly fisherman, and a devoted choir member. Known for his happy and enthusiastic spirit, Giles loved to laugh and brought joy to everyone he met. He enjoyed spending time in nature and was always up for a competitive game of dominoes or euchre. He was a loving son, brother, husband, father, and grandpa who will be deeply missed.

A celebration of Giles' life will be held on September 28, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Emmanuel Baptist Church, located at 1819 Hill Ave, Fort Myers, FL 33901. Flowers for the family are welcome or memorial donations may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church of Fort Myers. Burial will be at Ortona Cemetery in Glades County, Florida.

The family would like to extend a special message of gratitude to the staff at Fort Myers Rehabilitation and Nursing Center for their exceptional care, as well as to the many friends and family who have stood beside them during these past many months.

Giles Geiger Tompkins' legacy of love, dedication, and service will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His memory will be cherished forever.
