Alan was born November 12, 1929, in Portland, Maine to Percy Fletcher Rogers and Bethia Agnes (Turner) Rogers, and after their deaths lived with Fred and Gertrude (Jones) Nickerson of Taunton, MA.
Alan was a graduate of Taunton High School class of 1947 and of Brown University, Providence, RI, in 1951 as a Chemist.
Mr. Rogers proudly served his country as an officer in the United States Air Force after graduation, before beginning his career as a chemist and plant manager with Union Carbide Corporation and later as Quality Assurance and Product Safety Manager with First Brands Corporation.
Alan and Muriel Ann Chappell married in Taunton, MA, on November 8, 1952. He was loving husband and father who was very involved in the lives of their three sons. His presence at scouting events correlated highly with precipitation, earning the rank of Valient Leader of the Order of the Drenched-Ducks; he attempted to use this as an opportunity to teach his children that correlation is not to be confused with causation.
Alan and his wife (and first mate) Muriel were avid sailors graduating in stages from a 19-foot sailboat on Lake Michigan to a 36-foot ocean-going sailing yacht on the Atlantic out of Westport Point, MA. After retirement, they moved to Punta Gorda, FL where Alan took on the role of Squadron Education Officer of the Peace River Sail and Power Squadron in Charlotte County, FL, teaching basic boating skills and celestial navigation between cruises around southwestern Florida and the Keys.
Over the years, Alan and Muriel lived in several different states in the US ultimately moving to Shell Point, Fort Myers, FL. He was active in several churches along the way serving at different times as Youth Advisor, Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent, Chairman of various committees, President, and Treasurer. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of Columbia-Daskam Lodge 26, AF&AM in Glastonbury, CT, and a member of The Sphinx Shrine Temple in Newington, CT.
Alan is survived by his loving wife and constant companion of 73 years, Muriel of Fort Myers FL, three sons Gary N Rogers (Jeri Lane) of Thousand Oaks, CA, Donald F Rogers (Diane Nicholson) of Sandy, UT, and Thomas A Rogers (Ellen) of Pittsfield, MA, and five grandchildren, Geoffrey Rogers (Lin Fu), Scary Rogers, Alicia Rogers-Bridge (Shane Bridge), Christopher Rogers, and Catherine Campbell (Alec Campbell) and very cute great-granddaughter Hayden Rogers-Bridge.
He was preceded in death by his brother Dana Rogers (Marion Perry).
Celebration of Alan’s life will be held privately by his family at a future date.
Memorial remembrances may be made to Harry Chapin Food Bank, 3760 Fowler St, Fort Myers, FL 33901, or to a charity of your choice.
