She was born on October 9, 1938, in Clearwater County, Minnesota. Florence was married to Merlin Nickolauson, with whom she had two daughters, Margie Romani and Janet (Kris) Schwengel.
A devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Florence’s greatest joy was her family. She was also an “honorary” mom, grandma, and auntie to anyone who needed one. She is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Margie and Janet; grandchildren: Ashley, Alexandra, Lauren, Kyle, Alyssa, Mia, and Emma; and great-grandchildren: Austyn, Tripp, Krew, and Hadley. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Ryan.
Florence is survived by her sisters, Karen, Patti, and Cheryl; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and close friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Marjorie Porter; siblings: Gwen, Gloria, Gen, Alex, and Andy; and many dear friends and family members who went before her.
Florence lived a full and active life. She retired from Zurich Insurance as a premium auditor and spent many years in Florida before moving back closer to family. She was a talented seamstress, enjoyed birdwatching and gardening, and could often be found working on puzzles and baking when she wasn’t cross-country adventuring. She was proud to say that she had visited all 50 states, and loved sharing stories of her travels.
Her greatest joy came from cheering on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren at their events and staying closely connected with friends and extended family. Florence also loved being part of an online community, the Southwest Florida Eagle Cam Facebook Group - where she enjoyed countless hours watching “her” eagles build their nests and raise their young.
A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, November 2, 2025 at 1:00 pm at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 24500 N Old McHenry Road, Hawthorn Woods, IL 60047.
In lieu of flowers or monetary donations, the family asks that those wishing to honor Florence consider a gift to CROW (Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife) at crowclinic.org, an organization that directly supports the care of the Southwest Florida Eagle family.
