Dr. Richard Wayne Pippen

Richard Wayne Pippen, age 90, of Naples, Florida, died peacefully in his sleep on March 3, 2026 surrounded by his loving family. Before retiring to Naples, FL. he was a long-time resident of Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Born in Villa Grove, Illinois in 1935 to William S. and Martha Jane Pippen, he graduated as Salutatorian from Villa Grove High School in 1953. Richard received his Bachelor's degree from Eastern Illinois University, and he earned both his Master's degree and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He joined the faculty of the Department of Biological Sciences at Western Michigan University in 1963 and served as Department Chair from 1975 to 1991.

Dr. Pippen received the WMU Alumni Teaching Excellence Award in 1970 and 1982, becoming the first faculty member honored twice. He authored over 21 professional publications and led student groups to Belize and Puerto Rico for tropical ecology studies. He also served on the Board of Directors and conducted regular field trips for The Michigan Botanical Club, The Nature Conservancy of Michigan, and the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy.

Starting in 1992, Prof. Pippen was appointed as the Resident Director of the Western Michigan University-Sunway College Twinning Program in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia until retiring in 2003, when he moved to Naples, Florida.

In Naples, Richard greatly enjoyed growing orchids and participating in the Naples Orchid Society, serving as Co-Chair of the Show Committee, Coordinator of the Orchid Culture Class, and President.

Richard is survived by his wife, Sally, of 65 years, their son, Jeffrey, and granddaughter, Erica, of Mebane and Durham, North Carolina respectively. Richard will be remembered for his good humor; patience; love for international travel, cultures, cuisine, and nature; and his remarkable ability to share his enthusiasm and knowledge with family, students, and friends. In his later years, he particularly enjoyed his work with and friendships through the Orchid Society and spending time with his son and family on their frequent visits. He will be missed by many.

Cremation took place in Naples, FL. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Western Michigan University, or the Naples Orchid Society.
