Born in East Boston, Massachusetts, John was the beloved son of the late Joseph and Rose Colantuone. He was preceded in death by his cherished wife of over 50 years, Barbara Elaine (Wingard) Colantuone; his son, John N. Colantuone Jr.; his sister, Francis Lavita; and his brother, Joseph Colantuone.
John carried each of them with him throughout his life, honoring their memory in the way he loved, the way he laughed, and the way he showed up for others. Their influence shaped the man he became-steadfast, warm, and deeply devoted to family.
John attended Northeastern University nights after graduating from East Boston High School. During his teenage years, he worked alongside his father delivering ice and oil, eventually obtaining his oil burner license- a skill that reflected his dedication and work ethic from a young age. John proudly served his country in the Army National Guards.
John is survived by his loving children, William J Colantuone of Plymouth, Massachusetts, and Diane Colantuone Cheverie of Dighton, Massachusetts, along with five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren who brought him immense pride and joy.
A devoted family man, John loved being surrounded by family and friends. He purchased a parcel of land in Alton Bay, New Hampshire, on Sunset Lake and built an A-frame cottage with a loft that could sleep more than 15 people on cots or just in sleeping bags. Affectionately known as “The Funny Farm,” it became a summer haven where family and friends gathered for laughter, adventures, and countless memories.
When it was time to sell The Funny Farm, he turned his vision to an oceanside cottage on Blueberry Lane in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Though the Blizzard of ’78 altered those plans, John persevered, transforming his backyard into a “Mini Margaritaville,” complete with and inground swimming pool, gazebo, grilling station, horseshoe pits, fire pit and music-always welcoming friends, family, and plenty of spirits.
Always seeking ways to create joy and connection, John co-owned the Marshfield Sports Center, a local bowling alley that became another cornerstone of family fun. It wasn’t just a business to him-it was a place where laughter echoed, friendships formed, and generations of families made memories under his welcoming presence.
John always supported his family, and that devotion showed in countless ways throughout his life. When his wife, Barbara dreamed of sharing her talents by opening a candy shop- Confections Unlimited- John was right there beside her, encouraging her every step. The shop flourished, especially with expansion of adding an ice cream shop- “The Dairy Bar” on the adjoining side as part of his daughter Diane’s college internship.
Then it was time to move onto a different venture and Speede Oil Change and Tune-up became the next business that would keep his sons John and Bill busy learning the ins and outs of the oil and tune up business.
Another example of how John’s steady support and belief in his loved ones helped turn their ideas into something real, joyful, and lasting.
John’s professional life was as dynamic as his personal one. He dedicated over 25 years to the Polaroid Corporation before spending many years at The First Year’s in Avon, Massachusetts, where he frequently traveled to Hong Kong to oversee product development. His work reflected his strong leadership, dedication, and passion for excellence.
Later in life, John found companionship and happiness with his life partner, Joan Coy of Easton, Massachusetts. For the past thirteen years, they shared adventures traveling both by land and sea making new memories together. Joan’s family embraced John as one of their own.
John will be remembered for his devotion to family, his adventurous spirit, his love of life, and his fun-loving personality. He especially enjoyed his favorite songs, “Red Solo Cup” and “I Did it My Way” which perfectly reflected his zest for life and independent spirit.
