John Brooks “Brooksie”
John Brooks, lovingly known as “Brooksie,” was born in Cape Charles, Virginia. A natural athlete growing up, he carried a love of the outdoors, a hardworking spirit, and a quiet strength throughout his life.
Brooksie was a private man who valued his solitude and kept his circle small, sharing his time and himself with those closest to him. He spent his life working in construction until his health no longer allowed him to do what he loved. There wasn’t much he couldn’t fix, build, or figure out. He was a man who could work on just about anything, and if you asked him about fishing, you were sure to hear one of his legendary fish stories.
Fishing, mudding, and spending time with his children, Evan and Christina, were among his greatest joys. He loved being out on the water and had a story for every fish he ever caught. Of course, his children knew the truth: they always managed to outfish him. No matter how many times they beat him, there was always another story about the one that got away.
In the last eight years of his life, his two grandsons, Braxton and Gunner, became the light of his world. Affectionately known to them as “Grampy Brooks,” he held a special place in their hearts, and they brought him a happiness that will forever be remembered. The memories they made together will be treasured.
Brooksie was a man of few words, a hardworking soul, and someone who lived life on his own terms. He may not have been one to share his feelings openly, but the love he had for his family was unmistakable. His absence will leave a space that cannot be filled, and he will be remembered in the stories told (walked barefooted in the snow up hill both ways), the waters fished, and the memories held close by those who loved him.
He is survived by his mother, Charlotte McCready; his sister, Olevia Ann Peterson; his brother, Thomas J. Brooks; his daughter, Christina Swanson; his son, Evan Brooks Johnson; and his beloved grandsons, Braxton and Gunner, who will forever remember their Grampy Brooks.
Though he may be gone from this world, his stories will live on, his memory will remain, and he will be deeply missed by all who loved him.
Rest easy, Brooksie. May the fish always be biting, and may the stories never end.
A get together is planned for October 17th at Ralph and MaryAnne Savage home at 1pm. A time of fish stories, laughs and a good meal. Just the way Brooksie would want it. Please reach out to them or Evan and Christina for more details.
