Zachary “Zack” J. Butler passed away in the comfort of his home on April 24, 2022 at the age of 38 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honor his legacy by living life to their fullest.
Zack was born December 24, 1983, in Baltimore, Maryland to James and Beverly Butler and moved to Pensacola, Florida some years later.
Zack graduated from Washington High School and received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of West Florida in 2007. In 2005, he started at the Santa Rosa Island Authority as a Pensacola Beach Lifeguard (aka “Beach 11”) and later transitioned into teaching the Junior Lifeguard Program. From 2008-2015, he taught physical education at Holley-Navarre Intermediate. In 2015, he transitioned into Adaptive Physical Education where he taught ESE students at all schools in the Gulf Breeze area and Oriole Beach Elementary. Zack was selected as the 2023 Santa Rosa County Teacher of the Year.
Zack was preceded in death by his father, James Butler. He is survived by his beautiful wife of 11 years, Eva Butler; his 2-year-old daughter, Olivia Mae; his rescue dog, Emma; his mother, Beverly; and his sister, Virginia (Jon, Maria, Liam) Clark of Pensacola, Florida.
Zack was the kind of person that left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He was known for his cheerful attitude, contagious smile, distinct laugh, and vibrant personality. He was the most grateful person, even saying “thank you” during his darkest moments. His deep love for his wife and daughter was apparent and he thought the world of them. Zack’s pride was in his schools, students, junior lifeguards, and he shared his passion with thousands of children over the past several years. His family will have countless memories of him as a loving and loyal husband, father, son, and brother. We will all miss his energy and his presence. He left a mark on the world that will never be erased, and he will remain forever in our hearts.
A memorial service will take place at 10 am on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at Marcus Pointe Baptist Church, 6205 N W Street Pensacola, Florida 32505.
The family wishes to extend our deepest thanks to family, friends, and coworkers for your kindness during our greatest sadness. We appreciate it more than words can express, and it will always be remembered. Your words have comforted us, your support has strengthened us, and your love has sustained us. A special thank you to Baptist Hospital and Emerald Coast Hospice for the love and care given to Zack and family during his time of illness. We would also like to thank Marcus Pointe Baptist Church for their love and support.
To honor Zack’s wishes, in lieu of flowers, we respectfully request donations for Olivia’s college education. If you are interested in donating, please Venmo @Eva-Butler-1 or contact Eva for mailing address.
