August 3, 1944 – January 31, 2021
Jack was born in Wichita Falls, Texas. During his elementary school years he spent time in Long Beach, California, before settling with his Mom and brother in Foley, Alabama. Jack was a graduate of the Foley High School Class of 1962. He went on to attend Troy State College to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He then began his teaching career at Hobbs Middle School for the 1966 -67 school year. The following year, he moved to Milton High School where he devoted the remaining 45 years of his teaching career.
Jack was predeceased by his father, Millard Jack Bryan, Sr.; his mother, Alice Ruth McKinley Meader; and his brother, Robert Emmett Meader. He is survived by his daughter, Brandy Bryan, Warner Robins, GA; his grandsons G. Seth Wilson (Brittany), Savannah, GA and Samuel L. Wilson, Statesboro, GA; his great-grandchildren, Declan Charles Wilson and Baby Girl Wilson, both of Savannah, GA; sister-in-law, Jeanette Meader, niece, Sharon Meader and great-nephew, Samuel C. MacDonald, all of Foley, AL; and numerous cousins in Texas.
Whether you called him Jack, M.J., Jackson, Granddaddy Jack, or the often mis-pronounced Ma-lard and even Mildred, he was ever ready and willing to offer all of the sports trivia and song lyrics one could absorb. Jack was an avid Dale Earnhardt, Sr., fan, and you never saw him without his #3 pendant. Alabama football was his passion and that devotion likely fueled him to see just one more National Championship win and his all-time favorite player receive the Heisman Trophy this year. Those closest to him are very familiar with his “jamming” often done in the early morning hours as playing his favorite music was a part of his daily routine.
Jack considered teaching his greatest blessing. He loved hearing from former students and following their successes as they completed college and started families. He took great pride in the accomplishments of his former students as they went on to become doctors, lawyers and professional athletes. His greatest joy and inspiration for life, however, were his daughter, grandsons and many life-long friends.
A heartfelt thanks to the medical professionals, nurse angels, and faithful friends that helped Jack continue to live in the place he loved and in the town he vowed to never leave, Milton. Dr. Christopher LeCroy, Dr. John Lee, Karra Graber, LeAnn Howell, Sonya Stroble, Daphne Coxwell, Stephanie Thomas, Chuck Douglass, Burt Locklin, Joe Moberly, Jerry Driggers and Myra Ward you each made his life better and richer. To the wait-staff at Grover T’s, Ace’s and Cisco’s, thank you for providing wonderful care, cherished outings and an always friendly smile.
A celebration of life will be announced for a later date this spring.
