Fred Aldon Thompson, age 86, of Milton, FL, passed away Saturday, May 23, 2026. He was born in Prichard, West Virginia, on July 8, 1939, to the late Charles Thompson and Lenora Thompson. Beside his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, high school sweethearts, of 55 ½ years, Barbara Ann Hatten, brother Harold Thompson and his sister Jean Leslie.
Survivors include his daughter Melody Michener and his son in law, who was more like his own son, Eric Michener. His two grandsons, who he couldn’t have loved more, Chance Michener and Ezra Michener; his brother Charles “Bud” Thompson (Aleta), and his sister Jewel Short, his uncle James Davis (Jean), And his two animal dog babies, who stayed beside him until the end, Ally and Junebug. Fred joined the Marines from 1958-1961. He was a very proud Marine, which was evident by anyone who met him. He and Barbara wed in 1961 when he returned from service. They lived in a few different states, adopted Melody in 1970, then his Construction job brought his family to Milton in 1979. When Melody wasn’t in school, they’d travel state to state during the summers in their travel trailer, going to almost every state. The boys called Fred, Popy. They were so lucky to have him in their lives. Popy loved telling his stories and debating with you on anything. He was a great dad and wonderful Popy. We will miss him so much.
There will be a Celebration of Life Saturday, May 30, 2026, at National Cremation & Burial Society with Chaplain Greg Nowell officiating. Fred got close with him during his visits with Hospice. He saw Fred every week for months. Visitation at 12 noon and Service at 1:00 p.m. Interment followed in Memory Park Cemetery.
The family would like to thank Emerald Coast Hospice, especially Brittany, for such wonderful care. And Home Instead caregivers, especially Ashley, who he raved about and only wanted her to help him. Thank you to friends and family for reaching out and especially your prayers. Please continue them.
The National Cremation & Burial Society of Milton has been entrusted with the arrangements.
