Betty Jo Bounds Dahnke, aged 88, was called quietly home to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ early Sunday morning, September 6th 2026, in Destin, FL. Born on May 6, 1938, Betty Jo was a beacon of faith and kindness throughout her life, deeply devoted to her family and her community.
A traditional obituary for our mother would be a disservice to this unique woman whose life was defined primarily by devout Faith in God, her friendly and joyful spirit, a deep love of her husband and family, and above all... a willingness to happily serve God and the people that He placed in her path.
Betty Jo was a cherished figure in many lives, known for her enduring faith and her role as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She spent over 16 years caring for her husband, George William "Tater" Dahnke, after his stroke, demonstrating her unwavering love and commitment. Her family was the center of her world, especially her three sons, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy into her life.
Her early education took place at Fernwood Elementary School and Gulfport High School. Betty Jo's career was marked by a variety of roles that reflected her compassionate nature, from cleaning fish at the Florida Girl Docks with dear friend Liz Marler, teaching preschool at Noah's Ark, to her time as a missionary in India. Each role was underpinned by her mission to spread kindness and the teachings of Christ.
Betty Jo's spiritual journey was profound and filled with diverse experiences. She was initially part of the Fernwood Baptist Church in Gulfport, MS, and explored her faith across various congregations, ultimately finding a spiritual home at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Destin, where she was confirmed in 2001. Her faith was a cornerstone of her existence, influencing her actions and outreach to the community.
An avid gardener and lover of nature, Betty Jo found peace and solace in her garden and the beautiful shores of Destin. Her admiration for St. Francis of Assisi mirrored her own life choices of simplicity and service.
Betty Jo was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Edward Bounds, Sr. and Mabel Herrin Bounds; her brothers Tom, Raymond, and Kenny Bounds; her youngest son Kevin Eugene Dahnke; granddaughter Alba Maria Dahnke; and her beloved husband, George William "Tater" Dahnke. She is survived by her sons, William Michael Dahnke (Mary Lynn) and Shawn Edward Dahnke (Irene); grandson Royce Dahnke; granddaughter Miriam Ana Leonard (Morgan); great-grandchildren Mila Jo Leonard, Jayden Leonard, Kalei Pukanakona Mai, and Liliana Laine Reeves; and her extended Mississippi family, including nephew David Bounds and nieces Diane Bounds and Rebecca Bounds Barrett.
A Memorial Mass will be held in her honor on Friday, September 18th at 10:30 am at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Destin, FL. In remembrance of Betty Jo's life, the family requests that contributions be made in the form of attending church, paying forward kindness, or praying for one another, in lieu of flowers.
Betty Jo's legacy of love, faith, and kindness will continue to inspire all who knew her, and she will be deeply missed.
