Born in Bastrop, Louisiana, in 1940 to Horace and Jane Shirley, Betty “Sue” Brouillette lived a proud and selfless life. Sue passed away September 18, a few hours before her 86th birthday. A graduate of Millsaps College who later earned a master’s degree in education, she was passionate about her career as a second-grade teacher at Pea Ridge Elementary. After retirement and even in her final years she was recognized and remembered by former students and colleagues who went out of their way to compliment her on the difference she made for them. She built lifelong friendships with the other teachers she worked with, as well as members of her church and community. Many of these friends were there to graciously support her recently as daily tasks became more difficult. Many more lifted her up through prayer and remembrance. For this, her family is forever grateful. For Sue, nothing brought Sue more joy than her kids and grandkids. Her two boys, Christopher and Todd, were the center of her world, and she would tell anyone who would listen stories of her visits with them, their jobs, and their families. She also saw her stepson, Wayne, as her family and she took the same interest and pride in the lives of him and his wife, Christie, as well as Todd’s wife, Jill. Christopher passed suddenly just days before Sue. He is held closely in our heart. It is our belief that he was there to guide his mother to Heaven and relieve her of her worldly suffering. It is a comfort to know she will be with her son, and she will again be with her best friend, Paula. Sue’s grandkids, Hayden, Wyatt, Maci and Andrew, were the brightest light for her. Her love for them was uncompromising, and she drew much of her happiness from theirs.
Sue took pride in her independence. Her life was simple, frugal, and pure. She loved God and found comfort and strength in Him. She loved people and she loved nature, particularly birds, dogs and butterflies. She loved to travel and to read, and was never without a book; she poured over literally thousands of bright, hopeful stories.
It is impossible to summarize Sue’s life and heart in such a short account. She brought so much color and texture to her friends, her family and her community. Her innocence was exceptional. Those who knew her and loved her are better because of it. Rest easy, Betty Sue Brouillette. You’ve done your work here on earth, and you deserve the joy you have coming in Heaven.
