Romeo Sumlin passed on October 12, 2026, at the age of 79. Born October 13, 1946, and raised in Palmetto, Georgia, his life carried the steady rhythm of humble beginnings—days shaped by early work, shared responsibility, and a devotion to family. In his youth, he was lovingly called “Toki,” a name given out of love by his mother.
From an early age, Romeo learned what it meant to show up. He began working young to help support his family. His generosity was not the kind that asked to be noticed; it lived in the everyday ways he gave of himself, placing others first with a selfless grace that made people feel cared for simply by being near him.
He found joy in simple, living things. Gardening was one of his pleasures, and it became a point of pride when his careful tending earned him a local award and a place in the newspaper for cultivating the largest tomato plant in Palmetto. It was a fitting tribute to a man who understood patience, effort, and the quiet satisfaction of nurturing something until it flourished.
Romeo also knew how to lighten a room. He enjoyed joking and having fun with others, and he loved to dance—bringing laughter and movement where they were needed, reminding those around him that even hardworking lives deserve moments of play.
Romeo was preceded in death by his parents, Brodus and Martha Sumlin, his twin sister, Juliette S. Beasley, and his half-brother, Willie H. Sumlin.
He is survived by his son, Jacorey Rose (Kididia Rose); his grandchildren, Asia Abernathy, Arnold J. Abernathy Jr., and Romeo Rose; his sisters, Miranda Sumlin Kendrix and Linda E. Smith; his brother, Larry Sumlin; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A private celebration of life will be held in the future.
