

Richard graduated from the University of Florida in 1961 with a degree in journalism. He was a former investigative reporter for The Atlanta Constitution, winning numerous journalism awards including nomination for a Pulitzer Prize. He is also an author of both fiction and nonfiction books, and a freelance writer of both magazines and documentary films. After a decade of world travel, he became politically active in Washington, D.C., during the 1980s and 1990s, served in the administration of Mayor Sharon Pratt Kelly, first as spokesperson for the D.C. Department of Public Works and subsequently as a multi-agency coordinator of media relations in the mayor’s Communications Office.
Richard is preceded in death by his parents, Leopold and Lillian Hébert; sister, Elaine Lhota; brother, Ronald Hébert; and daughter, Renee Pope.
He is survived by his daughter, Therese Williams; grandchildren, Zach Pope, Travis Pope, Tori Curtis and Nicolas Williams; and 3 great-grandchildren.
