Raised in St. Louis as the oldest of seven children, John attended Sumner High School and later studied at Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri. From an early age, his imagination and drive were evident—qualities that stayed with him throughout a life marked by creativity, discipline, and a steady devotion to the people around him. He also took pride in being a gifted athlete, especially in tennis and racquetball, pursuits that reflected both focus and spirited determination.
John served in the United States Navy from 1958 to 1964, a commitment that reflected his sense of duty and helped shape the course of his life. His example also inspired his brother to enter military service, a lasting testament to the influence he carried within his family.
Professionally, John worked as a graphic designer, taking on both commercial projects and individual contract work. He valued honest work and the satisfaction of making a living through his talents, and he especially loved creating for family and friends. An artist at his core, his creative life extended well beyond a single medium—his hands and vision found expression in woodworking, painting, portraiture, metalwork, graphic arts, ceramics, and photography.
John also found joy in learning, including teaching himself to play the guitar—another reflection of a mind that remained curious and engaged. In the community, he was a member of AARP and an active presence at the Lou Walker Senior Citizens Facility, where his warmth and unmistakable presence helped him become known, affectionately, as the “uncle” of the neighborhood. He was well loved, widely known, and brought a sense of connection wherever he went.
Family was central to John’s life. He was deeply involved in family activities and carried his love in practical, constant ways—showing up, staying engaged, and making sure others felt included.
John was preceded in death by his son, Bruce Joiner, and brother, Henry Joiner, and sister, Estella Bernice Joiner. He is survived by his former wife, Frances Joiner; sisters, Sylvia Annette Joiner Whitner, and Kathleen Marie Joiner Robinson and Shearon Lofton; brother, Thomas Gerard Joiner; and many nieces and nephews in Atlanta, Georgia, St. Louis, Missouri, and Lanexa, Kansas.
