JoAnn Hughey Pyron, 88, passed away on May 2, 2026. Born March 13, 1938, JoAnn was raised in Piedmont, SC, the oldest daughter among eight children. From an early age, she found purpose in family—cherishing time together and helping oversee her younger siblings throughout her young life.
A devoted mother and homemaker, JoAnn traveled alongside her husband during his educational journey, anchoring her family with consistency and love. Her devotion was felt in the everyday rhythms of home, including the meals she prepared—fondly remembered by her son, who counted her “infamous Spam Casserole” among his childhood favorites, even as all who knew her recognized she was, in truth, a wonderful cook.
JoAnn also carried a lifelong respect for learning. After raising her children, she returned to her studies and earned a Bachelors in Accounting from Georgia State University at the age of 40 —an accomplishment that reflected both discipline and dedication.
In the years that followed, JoAnn delighted in the experiences alongside her son, Brigham, and his wife Lisa. She enjoyed traveling and cruising around the world, visiting places such as Mexico, Belize, Alaska, California, and Albuquerque’s International Balloon Fiesta. At home, she found pleasure in gardening, playing bridge, and decorating—especially in the quiet satisfaction of giving familiar pieces a second life. She also enjoyed spending time with “Bobo,” her son’s chihuahua, almost more than seeing others in her final months.
JoAnn was preceded in death by her father, James Dee Hughey Sr.; mother, Ruby Lee Darnell Hughey; brothers, James Dee “Sonny” Hughey Jr. and David Samuel Hughey; and nephew, Greg Hughey.
She is survived by her son, Brigham Pyron (Lisa Miller); her daughter, Christine “Tina” Novac (Michael); her sisters, Terri Diane Woods (Ronnie) and Marlene Reeves (Kenny); her brothers, Gary Hughey (Gloria), Mike Hughey (Sybil), and Steve Hughey (Mary); her sisters in law, Pat Coker and Nancy Kleckley Hughey; her nephews, Michael Hughey, Marc Hughey, Danny Hughey, Charles Hughey, David “DK” Hughey, Stephen Hughey, Christopher Hughey, and Ian Reeves; her niece, Gretchen Hughey Slosser and Stephanie McBride; and many other extended family members.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026 at 11:30 AM at Gretchen & Son's Residence, 107 Wynmere Way, Seneca, SC 29672. A reception will immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association (www.heart.org).
